That is what over 20,000 Long Island students said last week when it was time to take the standardized ELA tests for Grades 3 – 8. In a continuing attack on the Common Core standards, a movement spread largely through social media resulted in a dramatic refusal by students all over the island to sit for the test.
It was interesting to watch really. School administrators ready to record the refusals and usher the children to another location so those taking the test would not be disturbed or distracted. Efficiently processing both those students who opted out and those who did not.
Our house did not opt out. It just seemed a better approach to take the test, which has such little impact in any event on the students, and let the state see whether the common core curriculum is actually working.
Did you opt out? Would you?
